Can you survive on a Browser?

The rise in better techniques of programming have lead to faster and efficient user experiences. Better browsers and the faster internet has led to faster webpages. As the technology continues to get better and better, I wondered whether you can survive on just a browser. Is it possible for me to do all my daily task on a laptop? The answer, may be a yes. In this blog I will be giving the popular websites which can replace the applications on your laptop.

Coding and Programming

With a quick search, you will be able to find many online IDEs and compilers.

  • Google Colaboratory Notebook
    • This is an online Jupyter Notebook, which gets saved in your Google Drive. This also provides JavaScript.
    • Freemium, because you would have to pay if you reach the Google Drive limit.
  • Replit
    • This is an online code editor, where the code is saved on their servers.
    • Freemium, because of data storage limits.
  • CodePen
    • Only for HTML, CSS, JS and other web based languages.
    • Code saved on their servers
    • Freemium, because of data storage limit
  • GitPod
    • Code is saved on their servers
    • Freemium, because of time limits
  • Code Server
    • I found this on GitHub.
    • Online VS Code

Office Suite

An office suite is a collection of application aimed for "office purposes" like a text editor, spreadsheet editor and presentation maker. Popular examples are Microsoft Office, Apple Office, Libre Office

  • Microsoft Online Office
    • Yes, you can use Word, Excel online.
    • This has less features that the application
    • Freemium, because of data storage limits.
  • ICloud Office
    • Even Apple has, an online version.
    • This has less features that the application
    • Freemium, because of data storage limits.
  • G Suite
    • Google's office suite
    • Freemium, because you would have to pay if you reach the Google Drive limit.

In all cases the data is saved on their servers.

Multimedia Apps

Multimedia applications include picture, video and audio editor.

Photo Editor

  • Pixlr
    • This saves your data on your local storage and you can even download the project file.
    • Freemium. The paid version unlocks more fonts, stock images, removes ads etc.
  • Photopea
    • A Photo Shop like editor, although I can't confirm since I don't use Adobe.
    • I think this is fully free since, there is no pricing page on their website.

Video Editor

Video Editors exist, online, but I would not recommend them. Most, have a watermark, which can only be removed via the paid version. Video editing is a very resource heavy task for a computer, so this a category where browsers sadly do not win.

Games

Web based games are generally multiplayer, but you can find some single player as well.

Websites such as Crazy Games present many different genres of games to be played for free. Itch.io also has browser based games, which can be played on the internet.

  • Krunker
    • By far the most popular FPS game on the internet.
    • My personal favorite.
  •  Ev
    • Sci-fi theme FPS game.
  • Merc
    • This game play gives you a feeling of being part of some mission.
  • Burning Rubber
    • A game on Crazy Game.
    • A racing game, where you can also shoot the other cars.

If you are interested in Minecraft Creative, then you can also play that.

Conclusion

The web is getting better day by day. There are some cases where just a browser can be your friend. This list is short and will be updated every now and then. If you know any good websites and think it should be here, then comment down below and write! Till then,

Happy Browsing!!
